SUCCESSFUL VIPER MINI REGATTA – ALBANY

10 April, 2017

Eight Viper class yachts, six representing PRSC and two from South of Perth Yacht Club competed in six races over a harbour course. It was planned to have as many races as possible and Saturday afternoon got off to a good start with five back to back heats. Conditions were excellent with a steady ten to twelve knot southerly.

Sunday dawned without a breath of wind and the 9.00 am start was postponed until well after ten when a little whisper from the east appeared and it was race on.It was slow going but a little quicker than it was just to get to the start line. There was time only for the one heat but it was still a great weekend with a lot of interest being shown with the Vipers especially with the World series to be held in Fremantle in 2018.
It has been decided among those involved on the weekend to make it an annual event with a special trophy for the winner.
The overall winner after six heats was Rod Berteaux  from South of Perth who proved too good with You Get In The Bowl. Second overall was Murray Howson from PRSC who wasn’t far off the pace with Chinese Moccasin. In third place was Kim Leunig fom South of Perth in Grey Nomad. Fourth was Michael Cameron of PRSC with Easy Tiger Snake. Then followed Chris Lee in Snake Charmer, Steve Dines in Fang, Chris Oldham in Alice and then Bruce Mattinso in Black Mumba these four all from PRSC.

  • Rod Beauteaux Wins Western Australian State Title and a hug from Santa December 20, 2018Rod Beauteaux Wins Western Australian State Title and a hug from Santa
Western Australian State Championship We have been having some good racing leading up to Christmas. The Musto Regatta off Fremantle provided a weekend of good breezes and the States in early December promised more of the same. The State titles were held at SoPYC. The forecast was for light medium winds on Saturday morning and stronger breezes on Sunday morning. Because of weekend racing on the river, the races were all held in the morning. A fleet of nine boats hit the start line on Saturday. Unfortunately our World Champions, Nic Jerwood and Brian deVries were unable to compete. The first race had Rod Beurteauxleading around the first mark, in the first race, when their keel was tangled by a poorly laid mark rope. The rope was weighted down, deep enough not to be seen, but was not deep enough to clear the keel. Was this ...

  • Zeke Horowitz, Ian Coleman, and Brendan Healey Win Aspen Viper 640 International Championship sponsored by EFG November 20, 2016
Sunday, November 20, 2016 When it was decided that the Viper 640 sports boats would travel to Bermuda during November 2016 for its major regatta, everyone was looking forward to the big winds that prevail on the Great Sound at that time of year. Unfortunately on two of the days too much wind prevailed. The 4-day event, the Aspen Viper 640 International Championship sponsored by EFG, was held from Wednesday – Saturday, November 16-19, in conjunction with the 2016 North American Championship. The regatta came down to only six races over two days of sailing. As was the case on Thursday’s second day of the event when 25+ knot westerly winds with puffs well into the 30’s kept the racers ashore, the final day’s racing also had to be cancelled as the low hovering around Bermuda brought winds well in excess ...

  • Rumble in the Reach 2016 January 25, 2016
Lets rumble…. Each year, East Fremantle Yacht Club holds the Rumble in the Reach for the Western Australian Sports Boat fleet. The “Reach”, or Blackwall Reach, is a narrowing of the Swan River, a gorge if you like, 1.2 km long and .33 km wide. It is affectionately known as the “Drainpipe” The prevailing southwesterly wind funnels down the reach. It is notoriously difficult to sail with currents and a swirling wind.     The Rumble is open to all sports boats. It is a handicap start with boats off at 30 sec intervals. There are three races and if you place in a race, you are further handicapped for the subsequent race. The course is 600m from top mark to bottom. It is a normal windward leg and then a downwind slalom around four marks. The midway point of the course is set 100m in front ...

Chris is one of those lucky buggers. His original, “Snake Charmer” is now based in his hometown of Albany and his new boat in Perth. Both will be down at Albany this weekend.
