SUCCESSFUL VIPER MINI REGATTA – ALBANY

10 April, 2017

Eight Viper class yachts, six representing PRSC and two from South of Perth Yacht Club competed in six races over a harbour course. It was planned to have as many races as possible and Saturday afternoon got off to a good start with five back to back heats. Conditions were excellent with a steady ten to twelve knot southerly.

Sunday dawned without a breath of wind and the 9.00 am start was postponed until well after ten when a little whisper from the east appeared and it was race on.It was slow going but a little quicker than it was just to get to the start line. There was time only for the one heat but it was still a great weekend with a lot of interest being shown with the Vipers especially with the World series to be held in Fremantle in 2018.
It has been decided among those involved on the weekend to make it an annual event with a special trophy for the winner.
The overall winner after six heats was Rod Berteaux  from South of Perth who proved too good with You Get In The Bowl. Second overall was Murray Howson from PRSC who wasn’t far off the pace with Chinese Moccasin. In third place was Kim Leunig fom South of Perth in Grey Nomad. Fourth was Michael Cameron of PRSC with Easy Tiger Snake. Then followed Chris Lee in Snake Charmer, Steve Dines in Fang, Chris Oldham in Alice and then Bruce Mattinso in Black Mumba these four all from PRSC.

  • Musto Fremantle Regatta November 2, 2015
Musto Fremantle Regatta was again a huge event. Over 200 boats in 13 classes. The regatta can sometimes be light but we had a bit of everything up to 15 knots. Five Vipers attended and all boats shared the spoils in at least one race. Chris O’keefe had a great first day with a 2nd, 1st, 1st. and then crunch. The start crew had set the start line in shallow water, and with a falling tide eventually three boats hit the bottom. Chris’s damage meant his weekend was over. Rod Beurteaux could only sail the first day on AUS 216 and the helm was shared among his crew on the second day. None could match Graeme Monkhouse on Hissteria the second day. Graeme Monkhouse, Heather Monkhouse and James Williams dominated the last day with three 1st’s and two 2nd’s to win the series by ...

  • Duncan Adams, Chris Brown, Liam Green, and Ryan Bernicoat Win Inaugural Viper 640 European Championship July 7, 2015
Reported by Governor Justin Scott So there we were, having dinner in a quaint Italian town, and a regatta broke out… Riva Del Garda: The Ora, Vino Rosso, The Falmouth Four, Ted the Marsupial and the first Viper European Championships Twenty three Vipers and K6s descended on the utterly charming town of Riva Del Garda for the Euro Cup hosted by the Italian yacht club, Fraglia Vela Riva between June 22 and 26. This event without a shadow of doubt enters the bucket list of international Viper events that every Viper owner should try and do at least once in their lifetime. The sailing is “magnificent.”  It is sailing that simply does not exist anywhere else in the world. Typically the lake is calm in the morning but, by midday, the high plains to the north of Garda have heated up and convection ...

  • HAPPY NEW YEAR TO VIPER SAILORS AROUND THE WORLD January 9, 2015
2014 was a great year for racing a Viper 640, with major regattas in all four corners of the U.S., across Australia, and Europe. This coming year looks even more promising, as a full year of racing and Viper fun is already planned. GULF YACHTING ASSOCIATION MAY GO VIPERING The 30+ yacht clubs of the Gulf Yachting Association have been competing in their Capdevielle Regatta series for decades in club-owned Flying Scots. The GYA has been looking to replace the Flying Scots with a newer design that will be fast and fun to sail, and attract more people to participate in sailing on the Gulf Coast. Over the past year, Rondar Raceboats’ Paul Young and Dan Tucker have been working with the GYA in a focused effort to have the Viper 640 selected as the new GYA Capdevielle boat. The commodores of the GYA ...

  • Inaugural Australian Viper 640 One Design Regatta December 17, 2014Inaugural Australian Viper 640 One Design Regatta
Well, the 1st Australian Viper regatta had it all. 10 boats on the start line, no breeze, a shitload of breeze, great racing, 19.1 knots top speed and tight finishes with boats just seconds apart. Heather Monkhouse on Histeria said after the finish of one race , “We sailed really well during the race and we were near last. How did that happen? ……And then I looked in front and we had about seven boats just seconds in front of us. We were still in it, if we sailed well…. The racing is so close.” Saturday was meant to be breeze above 18 knots all day. It didn’t eventuate. Race one had Rob Beurteaux in Another Girl leading from Kim Leunig in a new Viper, TBA. The breeze dropped on the second windward leg and the back markers hit the right hand corner. What’s that song ...

  • Geographe Bay Race Week: Vipers, Passage Races, Short Courses,Surfing and Wineries! February 27, 2012Geographe Bay Race Week: Vipers, Passage Races, Short Courses,Surfing and Wineries!
Geographe Bay Race Week Regatta is done and dusted for another year. I was going to write daily reports but restaurant meals, parties and laziness prevented me. About eighty five boats started overall. A bit down on last year. The IRC racing fleet was only about 20 boats. The GFC seems to be affecting us all. The sportsboat fleet was down in numbers but the competitive bar was raised. Five Viper 640’s, one Shaw 650, two Melges 24’s and a Sprinter started. The Melges added some welcome tough competition to the sportsboat fleet. Peter Chappell, multiple Australian champion with titles in Sharpies, 505’s, and Etchells sailed one. Peter Sorrenson , a legend in 18 ft skiffs and many other classes sailed another.   This was a rematch between the Melges and the Vipers. The last time these two classes battled for honours on the ...
