  • Rod Beauteaux Wins Western Australian State Title and a hug from Santa December 20, 2018Rod Beauteaux Wins Western Australian State Title and a hug from Santa
Western Australian State Championship We have been having some good racing leading up to Christmas. The Musto Regatta off Fremantle provided a weekend of good breezes and the States in early December promised more of the same. The State titles were held at SoPYC. The forecast was for light medium winds on Saturday morning and stronger breezes on Sunday morning. Because of weekend racing on the river, the races were all held in the morning. A fleet of nine boats hit the start line on Saturday. Unfortunately our World Champions, Nic Jerwood and Brian deVries were unable to compete. The first race had Rod Beurteauxleading around the first mark, in the first race, when their keel was tangled by a poorly laid mark rope. The rope was weighted down, deep enough not to be seen, but was not deep enough to clear the keel. Was this ...

  • Brad Boston’s Jackpot wins the 2018 Viper 640 Great Lakes Championship August 6, 2018Brad Boston’s Jackpot wins the 2018 Viper 640 Great Lakes Championship
Reported by Cole Constantineau and translated into Canadian (ok, English) by Brian Johansen. Sailing out of the idyllic Sarnia Yacht Club over two days, Brad Boston, with Mike Vigrass and Cole Constantineau won the 2018 Viper 640 Great Lake Championship.  The next three spots on the leaderboard were hard fought, with a 3-point spread from 2nd to 4th place.  After the dust settled following the last race, Steve Chapman’s Oshunmare, with Christophe Ledent and Quinton Gallon aboard, finished the regatta in 2nd place and Brian Johansen’s Northern Honey Badger (with crew Jonah Kember and Betsy Carson) finished in 3rd. The spectacularly clear and inviting waters of southern Lake Huron proved to be the perfect meeting point for the Great Lakes Viper fleet which enjoyed both warm hospitality from Sarnia Yacht Club, regatta organizer Brian Johansen and tip top on-water race management courtesy ...

  • Van Sheppard named 2018 Viper 640 Canadian Champion June 19, 2018
Great Lakes sailors meet in drift-fest for Canadian Championship The Nepean One-Design regatta has been a fixture on the Great Lakes circuit for five years now. It’s always a great regatta from a social perspective and often a notoriously light, variable wind event. The 2018 edition was no exception, with 10 Great Lakes Vipers meeting to challenge for the 2018 Canadian Championship over the June 16-5-16 weekend. Saturday turned into a hot, sunny rafting event with plenty of good laughs and beer, but no racing. Sunday promised better, but the wind didn’t begin to fill in until 1130 leaving time for only two races. Van Sheppard, with his crew of Harvey Barnes and Gord Fleming sailing on 211 “Wadjet,” was crowned 2018 Canadian Champions followed by Steve Chapman on 288 “Oshunmare” and Ron Schute on 117 “Rum Theory” in third. Of note: three ...

  • Hybrid Blackout Panda Team Wins Second Sarasota Event January 13, 2015
What do you get when you combine half of Viper 205 Blackout Proposal, with Viper 222 Ghost Panda? Blackout Panda, with Peter Beardsley, Danny Pletsch, and Megan Magill Pletsch, and a win at the second stop of the Sarasota Winter Viper Circuit.   The top two teams from the Western Long Island Sound season standings in 2014 combined forces to win the first North American Viper regatta of the year, sailed in a moderate, shifty northeasterly in Sarasota Bay January 10-11. “It made sense to team up since our respective co-owners couldn’t make the trip, and sailing in shorts in January is a lot better than staying at home,” Beardsley explained. Each sailor on Blackout Panda took turns on the helm every third race, making for a unique team win with three co-skippers. Saturday saw fleet newcomers and 505 class veterans from ...
