The Newport RI Viper 640 fleet is one of the fastest growing Viper fleets in the world! From 2 boats at Sail Newport in 2008, to 11 in 2011, we’re taking over sportboat racing on Naragansett Bay!

Join us on Tuesday evenings and for a few major regattas in Newport (Bacardi, Sail Newport) and around the Bay (Wickford and more)


  • The Tour hits the mountain stage. July 16, 2009
    Written by Justin Scott “The profile of the stage suggested it would suit strong climbers and  cunning, powerful and daring descenders” – Tour De France Progress Report July 11th 2009. We were slumped exhausted in our Viper communal house at Newport after the first day of racing, watching stage 8 of the Tour De France, and the analogy was not lost on us. Five races of 4 legs apiece. A sixth race of 3 legs Each leg of 1.1 mile. A 3 mile ride to and from the race course. You do the maths! In stunning weather of sunshine and breeze of 14 – 18 knots, at the Coastal Living Newport Regatta, the Viper North East circuit had definitely hit the “mountain stage”.   Category one uphill legs and Yeee Haw planes downwind certainly suited the strong climbers and daring descenders. The Barrington YC Race Committee took full ...

  • 2008 Coastal Living Newport Regatta July 16, 2008
    Written by Dan Tucker The 2008 Coastal Living Newport Regatta was a blast for the Viper Sailors The other sportboats in Division 4 had fun as well! Eight Vipers traveled to Newport for a sportboat fest. We shared a line with the RS K6’s, Laser SB3’s, 5o5’s and Nacra 17’s. We were joined by an Open 5.70 as well. The weather was sunny & gorgeous both days, with Sunday being the breezier day -sustained wind @ 20 knots with some gusts to 25 according to SailFlow. Downwind boatspeeds were in the mid-teens, it was exciting Viper sailing! Saturday was a nice warmup with 10-12 knots. Class President Justin Scott sailed strongly to an early points lead, which he held throughout the weekend, winning with 18 points over 10 races (with one throwout).
