Words from a Prez

Summer sailing is upon us in full bloom. We’ve recently had the Viper 640 Mid-Atlantics and last weekend I sailed in the Bayview One-Design Regatta where we raced in the Detroit River, only yards from the spectators sitting in the club bar! As you’ll see in the listings below, there are a slew of upcoming regattas that you should consider putting on your calendar now, getting your crew lined-up, and registering to sail.

With regatta planning in mind, I focused on the “big show” that’s being planned in August in Long Beach, CA. Alamitos Bay Yacht Club will be hosting the 2019 Viper 640 Worlds presented by Goslings (and Pre-Worlds) from August 17-24. As of today, 45 boats have registered to sail; but with this being the first Viper Worlds on continental North America, US and Canadian sailors really should make this a priority event (if not a bucket list Championship). I made the trip to Alamitos Bay in 2014 for the North American’s and it was fabulous sailing and a great club for the social side.

The word around the boat park is that there are a number of Viper owners still on the fence regarding the Worlds. It’s time to hop off the fence, get your program ready, and for more information or to register for the event HERE.   NOTE: the early bird discounted registration period has been extended to June 15 to help the fence-sitters make their decision.

See you on the race course and at the Worlds in August,

Steve Chapman
North American Regional President

REGATTA REPORTS

The Viper 640 Mid-Atlantics were hosted by Eastport Yacht Club over the weekend of May 18-19.

A small but competitive group came together and enjoyed five challenging races at the mouth of the Severn River.

Saturday was a difficult day as the teams faced the onslaught of current from the north coupled with a light northerly breeze. The Susquehanna River outflow thru the Conowingo dam was 25% higher than average, which made the race track a one-sided affair. Anyone who got caught heading into the deeper water found themselves chasing the pack. Unfortunately the predicted wind was spot on for Saturday, and after attempting to start a second race where the fleet couldn’t quite get to the line, the race officers made the right move and signaled the end of racing for the day.  READ MORE

Viper 640 Great Lakes Region – Bayview One Design Regatta
Bayview Yacht Club
June 1-2

The Great Lakes region opened their season this past weekend with the first of our summer series regattas. There were six Vipers that joined the other 130 boats and over 700 sailors at Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit for the Bayview One-Design Regatta. A club steeped in racing tradition, founder and organizer of the Port Huron to Mackinac Island Race, and with strong match racing and team racing programs, we could tell upon arrival that this was going to be a fun, competitive event.  READ MORE

Vintage Vipering

Former Viper sailor Rob Durrell just joined the Viper Forum and sent along a shot from Sailing World’s coverage of the 1999 Annapolis NOOD regatta. Look carefully and tell us what you see different from today’s boats. This MK I has the aluminum mast and boom, the original, small rudder tower, only one mainsheet bridal and…Wait for it…a Boom Vang.

Thanks, Rob, for sharing and welcome back to the fleet.
