The EFG Viper Pan-American Championship – A Year-long Event culminating in the Championship Regatta during Bacardi Miami Sailing Week

Any Viper 640 can compete in the Bacardi Miami Sailing Week, but only those who have competed in at least one EFG Viper Pan-American Championship will compete for that prestigious title. Competitors can qualify to sail in the Championship by competing in a number of sanctioned events during the preceding 12 months including the 2015 EFG Winter Cup sailed in Miami immediately preceding Bacardi Miami Sailing Week. By participating in the Qualifying Regattas, competitors earn points that can be applied towards their overall scores at the Championship.
Preliminary EFG Viper Pan-American Qualifier Regattas
North America will have five qualifying events:
• Viper 640 North American Championship
• Canadian  Championship and Qualifier – Canadian Olympic Regatta Kingston (CORK)
• Long Beach NOOD
• Bacardi Newport Sailing Week sponsored by EFG in both years
• The EFG Winter Cup held the weekend before the EFG Pan-Ams

Europe will have two qualifying events:
• Cowes Week – Sport Boat Class
• In 2015 K6 Sport Boat Class European Championship

Australia has one qualifying event:
Australian National Sport Boat Championship

South America  participation is by invitation

The qualifiers from each of the Qualifying Events will be awarded appropriate EFG Pan-Am prizes during the EFG Winter Cup awards dinner at the Pre-Championship Regatta in March.

Competitors at the final Championship will be scored based upon their performance at that final regatta plus an additional score reflecting their performance in one or more of the Qualifying Events. As the Championship will be scored based on low scores, the following carry-over score will be added to the scores achieved in Miami with the lowest scoring competitor crowned champion:

Qualifying Event Performance Carry-over Points

  • Top quintile finish 1 point
  • Second quintile finish 2 points
  • Third quintile finish 3 points
  • Fourth quintile finish 4 points
  • Fifth quintile finish 5 points
  • Failed to participate in any Qualifying Event 7 points

These carry-over points will not be discarded in the final Championship event’s scoring.

The EFG Bank Winter Cup and Bacardi Miami Race Week Regattas

During the first week of March each hear, the top Viper 640 and sport boat sailors from around the world including the winners of the Qualifying Events will converge on Miami, FL, for a week of racing and camaraderie. The week begins with the popular EFG Winter Cup on Sunday and Monday. The EFG Winter Cup is not only a prestigious Cup in its own right but it is also the last opportunity for competitors to earn qualifying points or improve on qualifying points before the final championship event at the end of the week. In the two days between the Winter Cup and the Pan American Championships, there are various social events including the Miami Scorch, a luncheon on Key Biscayne and the awards dinner on Tuesday night.

EFG Bank Pan American Championship Finale

The week of sailing culminates with the three day final EFG Viper Pan American Championship as part of the Bacardi Miami Sailing Week. All competitors will assemble for a final regatta running from Thursday to Saturday, hosted in parallel with Bacardi Miami Race Week. The winners of the Championship will be named that year’s EFG Pan-Ams and will have their names engraved on the prestigious EFG Pan-Ams perpetual trophy. The winner will also receive a pewter replica of the trophy on a granite base to take home.
