  • Allstate Sugarbowl 2023 Viper 640 World Championship – Final Report April 3, 2023Allstate Sugarbowl 2023 Viper 640 World Championship - Final Report
Jackson Benvenutti Goes Wire-To-Wire to Win Allstate Sugar Bowl 2023 Viper World Championships New Orleans, LA (March 31, 2023) – The Allstate Sugar Bowl Viper 640 World Championship experienced the extremes of Lake Pontchartrain this week, when it started Monday with no wind and no racing, then finished Friday with too much wind that canceled races after the first one. But Jackson Benvenutti of Southern Yacht Club sailed to high finishes through all the conditions, scoring only 23 points the whole week to edge out second place Brad Boston of Windsor, Canada, who finished with 27 points. Benvenutti with his crew Christopher Alexander and Andrew Eagan never lost first place throughout the regatta, although they were tied with Boston after the second day of racing. Overall, Benvenutti took five firsts out of the ten races sailed. Boston took fourth in Friday’s race, sailing ...

  • Change atop the leader board at the 2021 Viper 640 North American Championship October 8, 2021Change atop the leader board at the 2021 Viper 640 North American Championship
At the end of Day 1 of the 2021 Viper 640 North American Championship at Noroton Yacht Club in Darien, CT, the top five boats were all in striking distance of each other. Now, after three more races on Day 2, two leaders have emerged and with a bit more separation in the top cluster. The second day started like the first with a two-hour shore postponement due to lack of wind. Everyone was face down in their devices debating which weather model would come true, but the Race Committee decided to use the best model: reality. Out they went at about noon to find a 6-knot easterly that eventually filled to around 10 knots. This shifty easterly, with the start of a long fetch down Long Island Sound, created some challenging conditions when the strong, ebbing current was added to ...

  • Tight pack at the top of the leaderboard at Viper 604 2021 North American Championship October 8, 2021Tight pack at the top of the leaderboard at Viper 604 2021 North American Championship
Thursday, October 7, 2021 It started out as a day when nobody was expecting to race due to a dire forecast of very light winds.  All the weather models called for 3-4 knots and then even less. After a two hour shore postponement, PRO Sandy Grosvenor (Annapolis, MD) started the first of three light air races in the middle of Long Island Sound off Noroton Yacht Club (Darien, CT). A light 5-knot southerly filled in at about 1300 and the 2021 Viper 640 North Americans were off and running. Well, maybe not running! “The key today, was to get off the line cleanly and connect the dots of breeze,” said Jay Rhame sailing with his boat partners Peter and Rachel Beardsley in GREAT SCOTT! “In the first race, we were boat-third at the start and tacked out to the right early. We ...

  • Grace Howie killing it at the Women’s NAs October 2, 2021Grace Howie killing it at the Women's NAs
Saturday, October 2, 2021 Day 1 of the inaugural Viper 640 Women’s North American Championship saw Chamber of Commerce conditions at Noroton Yacht Club in Darien, CT.  A fleet of 18 women-helmed Viper 640s sailed four races in a westerly breeze ranging from 9-14 knots on a sunny day with air temperatures in the low 70s. Two years ago, the Viper 640 Class Association decided to create a Women’s Championship starting in 2020. From the beginning, it was acknowledged that it would be difficult to field a sizeable fleet of all-women crewed Vipers as only a handful of the Vipers are owned and regularly helmed by women. Most boats consisted of at least half women or majority female teams, and there was one all-female team. Noroton Yacht Club Regatta Co-Chair Nancy Pearson brought yet another thematic element to the Championship: the entire Race ...

  • Marcus Eagan wins Viper 640 World and North American Championships August 25, 2019Marcus Eagan wins Viper 640 World and North American Championships
Congratulations to Marcus Eagan, Andrew Eagan, and Jackson Benvenutti (Mandeville, LA) for winning both the Goslings 2019 Viper 640 World Championship and the 2019 Viper 640 North Americans. Hosted by Alamitos Bay Yacht Club (Long Beach, CA), the four-day Championship consisted of 13 races in atypical Long Beach conditions – light, 8-10 knots except for the final race on Day 2 and the last two on the final day when winds were mid to high teens. It was a regatta where sailors were faced with a wide range of conditions and those atop the podium had to be capable of dealing with them all. Eagan ended with 33 points after five of the races atop the 41-boat fleet. In second was Geoff Ewenson (Annapolis, MD), Ryan Cox, and Jon Ziskind with 44 points having won an extremely consistent series with 11 ...

  • Goslings Viper 640 World Championship – Day 3 – Moving Day! August 24, 2019Goslings Viper 640 World Championship – Day 3 – Moving Day!
Day three of the Goslings Viper 640 World Championship is what the sailors called “moving day.” The Catalina High was predicted to suck the air out of the race course mid-afternoon and, after two good races in 8-10 knots, the High’s effect was felt, and the third race was finished in very light conditions. With two days and seven races under their belts, the sailors were going to either move up or down in the standings. For Marcus & Andrew Eagan and Jackson Benvenutti as well as Geoff Ewenson, Ryan Cox, and Jon Ziskind, it was moving up. After two days wearing the “yellow jersey,” local sailors Jay Golison, Steve Flam, and Eric Doyle fell. Eagan’s CAJUN UNDERWRITING moved from second to first winning all three of the day’s races , Ewenson’s EVIL HISS moved up into the second position with ...

  • “Spot” on at the Goslings Viper 640 Worlds August 23, 2019"Spot" on at the Goslings Viper 640 Worlds
When we made our travel plans to go to the Goslings Viper Worlds at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club, we all knew that we’d have great sailing, great fellowship and, most likely, some good shore-side activities. Little did any of us know what was in store for us. It turns out that ABYC has a hidden asset: Ed “Spot” Spotskey. Spot is the Event Chairman–no small task when hosting an international championship. It quickly became apparent that this was not Spot’s first rodeo! Here are just a few of the things that we were greeted with once we got off the water Wednesday evening: Flowing Goslings Dark n’ Stormies and Trademark Brewing beer…not just at the bar, but right at the head of the dock. Live music A great dinner of steak, salmon, chicken and, yes, lemon bars Flags from all the countries and states being ...

Jay Golison, Steve Flam, and Eric Doyle from the host Alamitos Bay Yacht Club (Long Beach, CA) sit atop the leader board after the first three races of the Goslings 2019 Viper 640 World Championship. With a scoreline of 1-2-6, Golison and team with nine points are a slim four points ahead of 2017 Viper 640 North American champions Marcus Eagan, Andrew Eagan, and Jackson Benvenutti who rolled a 5-1-7. From there, the scores drop to the twenties with three boats tied for third with 20 points and a slim 7 points separating third from tenth. Golison noted that he won the favored pin end of the line all three races and was able to sail his own race. Eagan said, “We sailed conservatively, starting mid-line, and worked on our fleet management. The left paid out the first race and the ...
