Marblehead Race Week was established in 1889 and is one of the pre-eminent one-design regattas on the East coast. In recent years the senior divisions have been incorporated with the National Offshore One Design (NOOD) Regatta which supports the organization and the parties. It is held during the last week of July and, in conjunction with the Junior Division, typically attracts over 200 competing boats across a dozen classes. Marblehead is an attractive New England town, centered around its harbor and historic "Old Town". The Eastern and Corinthian Yacht clubs are located on Marblehead Neck, which is an island connected to the town by a causeway at the head of the harbor by Deveraux beach. The Boston Yacht club is in the heart of Old Town. July is a beautiful time of year to visit Marblehead and during Race Week, the town is full of sailors and has a particularly festive atmosphere. There are local beaches, antique stores and of course, lobstah at any of the waterfront restaurants. Any visiting Viperers can be sure of a warm welcome from the Marblehead Viper fleet. Local tip to visitors with families, take the kids wading out to Brown's Island at low tide. It is a special spot. Local tips for the bar scene during Race Week. Most of the crews head over to Maddies after the NOOD parties (downstairs for the scene, upstairs for the locals). Another good spot is The Rockmore, a floating bar and restaurant off Village Street Landing. For accomodations and other recommendations, please don't hesitate to give the Marblehead fleet a call. |
