 Marblehead Harbor

The Corinthian Yacht Club will be hosting the Viper 640 North American Championships in conjunction with the Sperry Top Sider NOOD at Marblehead Race Week. We expect over 25 boats. The events this year incude two regattas within a regatta plus a tuning clinic from Rondar and a fun evening race on Wednesday night prior to the NOOD.

The two Regattas within a Regatta format is the same as 2007. The first regatta is Marblehead Race Week. Racing from Thursday to Sunday will score towards the NOOD regatta and Marblehead Race Week awards. The Vipers are very much part of Race Week and we will participate in all the social activities on shore.

The second Regatta is the Viper North Americans. Only the racing from Friday through Sunday will count towards the Viper North Americans. The Vipers will share a start line with other classes but that start line will be allocated the Corinthian YC's "A" team race committee and there will a dedicated PRO for the Vipers . The NOOD races on Thursday will be treated as practice races for the NAs.

We have a full social schedule. On Wednesday evening after "Wired Wednesday", there is a cookout at Boston Yacht Club. On Friday evening there is a Mount Gay NOOD party on the Porch at CYC. On Saturday evening we are hosting a Viper cook out and party by the swimming pool hosted by CYC and our sponsors. The Viper North American awards will be handed out on Sunday.

There is a small additional entry fee for the North Americans and we ask that you register your crew one week beforehand.

The Boston Yacht Club will be hosting an informal race on Wednesday evening prior to the regatta. The Vipers have been invited to participate in BYC's Wednesday Evening series. The warning signal will be at 6.00pm and the Vipers will have their own start. We have agreed to waive any and all class rules for this race. Affectionately known as "Wired Wednesday", you may rig the boat how you like, bring as many or as few crew as you like and go as fast or as slow as you want. There will be awards for first and last places. The first boat home sets up the drinks for the last boat home. Of course, your boat has to be strictly class legal again by 10.00am the following day.

Prior to the regatta, Paul Young from Rondar (The builder of the Viper 640) will be organizing a "Go Fast Clinic". We will also arrange debriefs after sailing where experienced Viper sailors will offer tips and observations to help everyone go fast.

We are expecting Viperers from Canada, Long Island Sound, New Jersey, Upstate New York, Annapolis, Texas, Arizona, Savannah, Wisconsin, Florida and of course Marblehead. This will be the largest North Americans since the class was relaunched 3 years ago.

Marblehead Race Week (Thursday through Sunday) will count towards the East Coast Champion of Champions Series which comprises Charleston Race Week, Marblehead Race Week and the Viper Atlantic Coasts in September, with 1/3rd of all races as a discard.

Marblehead is a drop dead gorgeous place to visit at the end of July. You can be sure of a warm welcome from the local Viper fleet. Please contact Chip Schwartz or Justin Scott for more information. Justin Scott (at) Viper 640 (dot) org  and  rhschwartz1959 (at) yahoo (dot) com.

Marblehead HarborNotice of Race for NOOD, registration form and additional information can be found on the Sailing World website. The NOR for NOOD constitutes a NOR for the Viper NAs with two amendments:-

1) The Viper North American championships shall be scored soley on the results of racing on Friday through Sunday.

2) At the request of the event organizers the Class Executive has waived the crew weight requirement in Para 10.1 of the Class Rules.

3) The InnocentRace Committee asks that all competitors make sure they comply with Class Rule 7.5.3 requiring that the registered sail number is prominently displayed on the mainsail. They also ask that the spinnaker either has no number or a number that corresponds to the # on the mainsail. The size of the expected fleet and the close finishes means that the scorers will be busy.
