CORK
Title:
CORK
When:
08.28.2009 - 08.30.2009
Where:
Kingston, Ontario Canada - Kingston
Category:
North East Regional Circuit

Description

Kingston hosts the annual CORK events and a number of other major events, including the 2007 VOLVO Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship. We are committed to deliver excellence in regatta management, encouraging the development of youth and elite athletes, volunteers and officials.

Last year 4 Ultimate 20s sailed in the CORK Offshore series in Kingston Ontario. We had such a great time that we began discussions with the organizers about adding a whole new dimension to CORK - a sport boat fleet modeled after the series held at the Larchmont NOOD last fall. They were very receptive.

CORK SportFest will be held August 28-30 in conjunction with CORK Offshore. The plan is to provide a separate race course and Race Committee for the SportFest fleet, scoring boats One-Design (fleets of 5 or more) and handicap under Portsmouth Yardstick.

Social events will piggy-back on the already successful CORK Offshore events and for 2009 includes BluesFest in Kingston. Kingston is the home of Queen's University, so you know that the night life in downtown K-town rocks!

We are expecting a strong showing from the Ultimate 20 and Viper 640 fleets and would like to invite other sport boats - Open 5.7, Melges 20, others - to participate. Launching ramps and a crane are available.

Information about CORK, accommodations, schedules, Notice of Race, Kingston information, etc. may be found at www.cork.org.

Oh yeah - Kingston is famous for its thermal breeze. Particularly in August! Over the winter the local hydro provider has installed something like 83 wind turbines near the entrance to Kingston harbour. There must be a 'bit' of wind to justify that investment!

If you are in the North-East this regatta should be on your schedule!

See who's registered.

Sign-Up! When you do, please put "Viper" in front of your sail number. We want to show who the Viperers are!

Here's some info about accommodations... (thanks to Harvey Barnes)

Description

Nestled at the mouth of the Rideau Canal and the St. Lawrence River at the eastern end of Lake Ontario, Kingston is a city built on a grand heritage and defined by an exquisite ability to blend the beauty of yesterday with the passion and sophistication of today. For a visual tour of Kingston - Click Here

The city dazzles with soaring 19th century limestone architecture and the amenities of a major centre, but retains the fascinating allure of a small town. Kingston is home to Queen’s, one of Canada’s finest universities, the Royal Military College and St. Lawrence College, as well as a thriving business community. The city hosted the sailing event for the 1976 Olympics and the Championships will be hosted out of the same venue as was used in 1976, offering a unique opportunity to experience the magic of the Olympic Games.
