Description

Excerpt from John Riddell's article about LBRW 2009.

“Is this Heaven?”  “No, it’s Iowa.”

Vipers at 2009 Long Beach Race Week… a simple, yet memorable exchange of lines in a classic movie about the creation of the ultimate playground to satisfy one’s dreams.  Well, Field of Dreams was created by a Hollywood studio, Long Beach/Alamitos Bay was created by Mother Nature and it is without a doubt the ultimate playground to satisfy any sailor’s dreams, especially if they happen to be racing a Viper 640 on ‘C - Charlie Course’: a consistent western afternoon breeze, building to 12-18 knots every afternoon under clear, sunny SoCal skies and inside the breakwater of Long Beach Harbor.  Heaven…, why not?

Description

Long Beach Yacht Club is located on a promontory at the east end of Naples Island in Long Beach, California.

Committees organize and manage a full schedule of yachting, educational, social and public-outreach programs, and the Club is recognized throughout the worldwide yachting community for its hospitality.

LBYC youth programs are strong and widely popular, focused primarily on swimming, sailing, surfing and — most importantly — fun. Parents and Club staff ensure there is a healthy mix of education, training and social activities. Sailing programs have access to boats ranging from eight-foot Sabots to Catalina-37 match race boats.

The Long Beach Yacht Club Sailing Foundation makes its fleet of eleven identical Catalina-37s available for regattas, for education and training, and for public outreach to members of the community who have few opportunities to be on the water, much less to experience sailing on these high-performance racing sailboats.

The Club is an integral part of the greater Long Beach community as well as the international yachting community.
